Herringbone parquet is the classic pattern of Burgos flats. How it differs from French herringbone (chevron), what care it needs and whether it pays off in a modern home.

Herringbone and chevron are not the same

Classic herringbone and French herringbone (chevron) are different layouts. In the classic version the ends of the pieces are cut at an angle, forming continuous V shapes.

Advantages

It gives a room character and visual width, especially in living rooms and hallways, and it is a lasting installation when well done.

Care and limits

Herringbone takes more time and skill to install than straight boards and is usually dearer because of the labour. It should be laid on a very well levelled base. If you want a similar look on a smaller budget, laminate and vinyl options with a herringbone pattern exist.
